Recommendation

One sentence of definition, and how it differs from the concepts it gets confused with. The definition is written to be quoted as it stands.

DEFINITION

A recommendation is the AI putting a brand forward as a candidate when a user asks for a vendor, service or product to be recommended. It is a signal closer to conversion than a plain mention.

Easily confused with

It is not a fixed ranking

Order of appearance inside an answer is a different concept from a fixed position in search results. The same question can vary in composition by moment, session and phrasing, so it should be measured as 'the proportion of repeated measurements in which you were a candidate' rather than as a position.

It is not a slot you can buy

OpenAI states that it shows advertising in an area separated from ordinary answers and that ad spend does not influence answer content or brand recommendations. A proposal guaranteeing a paid recommendation slot should be asked for its basis first.

In practice

  • Count recommendation appearance only on vendor-search questions. Mixing in informational questions blurs what the value means.
  • Check whether you persist as a candidate through follow-up questions — persisting matters as much as first appearing.
