GOOGLE AI OVERVIEWS

Google AI Overviews reference —
there is no dedicated
AI crawler

There is no separate crawler to satisfy in order to be cited in AI Overviews. The Google search index is the raw material, and blocking Googlebot removes you from search and AI Overviews at the same time.

SHORT ANSWER

Google AI Overviews is the generated summary that appears above Google search results. What separates it decisively from other engines is that there is no dedicated AI crawler — the raw material is the existing search index that Googlebot built. So working on AI Overviews is not a separate project; it starts with whether the page is properly in the search index at all.

Googlebot. There is no separate crawler for AI Overviews Check crawl stats and URL Inspection in Search Console.
Google-Extended
Not a crawler but a robots.txt control token with no User-Agent of its own. Its scope is training and grounding for the Gemini app and Vertex AI, and it is unrelated to search indexing, ranking, or AI Overviews visibility Blocking it leaves Google search visibility unchanged; it only restricts use on the Gemini side.
Index source
The Google search index. A document that is not indexed is not raw material for an AI Overview
How citations appear
Source links appear as cards beside or below the generated summary

Supported. That said, many queries produce no AI Overview at all, so visibility itself is conditional

CONDITIONS

What it takes to be cited in Google AI Overviews

These are the items that differ most in this engine. Principles common to every engine are collected on the answer engines hub.

01

You have to be indexed first

AI Overviews draw on the search index. A document that is not indexed will not become a candidate no matter how well it is written. Checking index status is step one.

02

You must not be blocking Googlebot

We have seen sites block Googlebot after confusing it with Google-Extended. That removes search visibility entirely, so it is the first thing to check.

03

The document has to contain the answer to a question

AI Overviews appear often on question-shaped searches. A page with only product descriptions and no paragraph that answers a question cannot become material for a summary.

04

Structured data has to match what is on screen

Structured data is not a device that guarantees visibility; it is an aid to conveying facts. When its values disagree with the visible page, it is worse than not having it.

MYTHS

Common misconceptions

Only the ones we meet repeatedly in audits.

  • “You have to allow Google-Extended to appear in AI Overviews”

Unrelated. Google-Extended controls training and grounding for the Gemini app and Vertex AI; AI Overviews visibility is decided on the Googlebot side. Navirang corrected its own wording on this on 2026-07-31.

  • “Appearing in an AI Overview increases clicks”

It can go the other way. This is the zone where users read the summary and stop, so judging performance by clicks alone can make a page look like a failure while it is being cited. Impressions and clicks have to be read separately.

  • “There is dedicated markup for AI Overviews”

There is not. Google's own documentation does not say that separate markup or chunking is required for generative AI.

HOW TO CHECK

How to check it yourself

A Navirang audit follows the same order. There is nothing stopping you from running it internally first.

  1. 01

Use URL Inspection in Search Console to confirm the target page is indexed.

  2. 02

Check robots.txt for a block on Googlebot, and confirm it has not been confused with Google-Extended.

  3. 03

In a logged-out or private session, run the target query and see whether an AI Overview appears and whether your domain is among the source cards.

  4. 04

Read impressions and clicks together in Search Console to isolate the zero-click segment.

FAQ

Questions about Google AI Overviews

Each answer is written to be quoted as it stands.

If we block Google-Extended, do we disappear from AI Overviews?

No. Google-Extended is not a crawler but a control token that is only interpreted in robots.txt, and its scope is training and grounding for the Gemini app and Vertex AI. It has no effect on the Google search index, on ranking, or on AI Overviews visibility. Blocking Googlebot, by contrast, removes you from search and AI Overviews at once — which is why not confusing the two names matters.

What do we have to do specially to appear in AI Overviews?

There is something to do before anything special: confirm index status. AI Overviews use the Google search index as raw material, so an unindexed document never becomes a candidate. After that comes putting a paragraph that answers the question inside the document. There is no dedicated markup or chunking standard for AI Overviews, and Google's own documentation does not advise one.

How do you measure AI Overviews visibility?

Search Console is the only engine that supplies impression and click data, so measurement is easier here than elsewhere. That said, Search Console does not break out visibility inside AI Overviews specifically, so we read it alongside direct observation — running the query in a logged-out session and checking the source cards. Navirang puts both routes in the same report and repeats them with the measurement conditions held fixed.

Are AI Overviews and Gemini the same thing?

No. AI Overviews is a generated summary inside Google search results; Gemini is a separate conversational service. They are controlled differently too — Google-Extended applies to the Gemini side, while AI Overviews visibility is decided by Googlebot. Visibility in the two has to be measured separately.
