PerplexityBot has to be able to read the page
If robots.txt blocks it, the page is never indexed in the first place. Sites that leave other engines open while blocking only Perplexity are more common than you would expect.
PERPLEXITY
Perplexity numbers its sources sentence by sentence. It is the easiest engine to count citations in by eye, and because it leans on live search, changes surface here first.
SHORT ANSWER
Perplexity is an answer engine that marks the documents it referenced with numbered footnotes at sentence level. Because the sources are shown on screen, judging whether you were cited is the least ambiguous here, and because live search carries a high share of the work, site changes are reflected relatively quickly. It is a good engine for establishing a baseline early in a measurement program.

Only items that can be verified are listed. Rows with a verification method on the right can be reproduced yourself.
CONDITIONS
These are the items that differ most in this engine. Principles common to every engine are collected on the answer engines hub.
If robots.txt blocks it, the page is never indexed in the first place. Sites that leave other engines open while blocking only Perplexity are more common than you would expect.
An engine that exposes its sources works in favour of documents carrying verifiable facts. Sentences with numbers, conditions and dates become citable units; adjectives do not.
With live search carrying a high share, there are stretches where a stated update date works in your favour. Old information left in place is what gets cited.
MYTHS
Only the ones we meet repeatedly in audits.
“Perplexity has few users, so it is not worth watching”
Its value as a measurement instrument is separate. Sources are visible and reflection is fast, so it is the engine where you can first confirm whether the work you did actually affected citation.
“A footnote number means you ranked highly”
Position in a source list is a different concept from search ranking and changes between sessions. We look at whether you appear and how repeatably, not at the order.
HOW TO CHECK
A Navirang audit follows the same order. There is nothing stopping you from running it internally first.
Check the rules for PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User in robots.txt.
In a logged-out session, ask the target question and record whether your domain is in the source list and in what position.
Repeat the same question days apart to see how much the source mix moves — this is what keeps you from judging on a single result.
Check the most recent PerplexityBot visit in your server log.
FAQ
Each answer is written to be quoted as it stands.
Because the source links are visible on screen, there is more room for a citation to turn into a click than in other engines. Even so, citation and visits are separate metrics and should be read separately. Navirang puts both in the same report but on different lines. A state where citations rose while traffic stayed flat, and a state where traffic exists but citations do not, call for different next steps.
Because change shows up here first. Live search carries a high share, so site changes are reflected relatively quickly, and numbered footnotes leave little room for interpretation when judging whether you were cited. That said, moving here first does not mean other engines will follow shortly — index cycles and selection criteria differ per engine, so we track them separately.
We do not set position as a goal. Source composition and order shift with session and timing even for the same question, so treating position as a performance metric means chasing numbers that do not reproduce. What Navirang records is appearance and repeatability — out of a fixed number of runs under the same conditions, how many times you appeared.
