AI share of voice
AI Share of Voice

One sentence of definition, and how it differs from the concepts it gets confused with. The definition is written to be quoted as it stands.

DEFINITION

AI share of voice is the proportion of all competitor mentions, across the same question set, that a particular brand holds. Your share can fall while your own mention rate stays flat, if competitors rise.

Easily confused with

How is it different from mention rate?

Mention rate is an absolute value and share is a relative one. They have to be read together because they can move in opposite directions — a rising mention rate with a falling share means the market grew; the reverse means a competitor dropped out.

It only holds when the conditions match

A share is only a share between values measured on the same questions, at the same moment, in the same engines. If your value is from this week and the competitor's from last month, the ratio means nothing.

In practice

  • Fix the competitor list at the outset and do not change it mid-measurement. Changing it changes the denominator and breaks the time series.
  • If an agency reports only share, ask for the absolute values (mention counts, citation counts) alongside.
