AI citation
AI Citation
One sentence of definition, and how it differs from the concepts it gets confused with. The definition is written to be quoted as it stands.
DEFINITION
An AI citation is an AI-generated answer marking a specific web page or domain as its source. It is a different concept from a mention, where only the brand name appears.
A citation signals trust in the document; a mention signals brand awareness.

How does it differ from a mention?
A mention is the name appearing in the answer body; a citation is that answer using your web page as a source. The two move independently — AI can recommend the brand while attributing a news article, or use your document as a source without recommending the brand. So they have to be counted apart.
Being cited does not mean being accurate
A citation marker does not guarantee the sentence came from that source. A substantial share of citations distorting their sources has been reported in the literature, so we record the accuracy of the description separately from whether a citation occurred.
In practice
- Record which URL was cited, not just the domain. Counting domains alone hides which document did the work.
- If a citation attributes to you a statement that is not in your document, it is a correction target.
