Retrieval
One sentence of definition, and how it differs from the concepts it gets confused with. The definition is written to be quoted as it stands.
DEFINITION
Retrieval is the stage where AI searches for and collects relevant documents before generating an answer. A document that does not make the candidate pool at this stage cannot be cited no matter how well it is written.
Easily confused with
It is a different problem from citation optimization
Raising the citation probability of a document already in the candidate pool, and getting into that pool in the first place, are different optimizations. Much of the advice in the market bundles both under 'AI visibility' — but if the blocked stage differs, so does the prescription.
Rewriting for citation can hurt it
An observation has been reported that content rewritten to be citation-oriented can harm the retrieval stage. Polishing phrasing alone looks at one stage of the pipeline.
In practice
- To check whether retrieval is the blockage, work in the order: indexed → crawler access → JavaScript dependence.
- The factors that reproduce are topical relevance between question and document, and position within the supplied context.
