DEFINITION
An answer engine is a system that generates and presents an answer to a question directly, instead of a list of search results. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Naver AI Search are examples.
Easily confused with
How is it different from a search engine?
A search engine answers 'which list of documents should I show for this query'; an answer engine answers 'which document should I use as the basis for this answer'. They share underlying signals such as crawling and indexing, but the final stage differs, so the outcomes can disagree.
Engines do not give the same answer
Because their retrieval paths differ. ChatGPT uses its own crawler plus third-party search providers, Perplexity its own crawler, and Naver AI Search the Naver index. One engine's result cannot be used to infer another's, so measurement has to be done per engine.
In practice
- Crawler names and robots.txt controls differ by engine. Some companies separate the training bot from the search bot.
- Do not read engines as a combined average — a change where citation begins in one engine only does not show in an average.
