What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
AEO practice series · Part 1 of 7SHORT ANSWER
SEO is the work of earning a click from a search result; AEO is the work of being cited inside an answer AI has written. The underlying technology overlaps considerably, but the performance metric changes from rank and traffic to citation rate and mention accuracy.
In one line
SEO deals with where you sit in a list of search results; AEO deals with whether you are inside the AI’s answer.
Both optimise the same site, so a great deal of the work overlaps — but because the goal differs, the priorities and the standards of judgement differ too.
The three-way comparison that adds GEO (generative engine optimization) is set out separately in the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO.
Why a new name became necessary
Picture what a search results page used to look like. Ten blue links in a row, and the user clicked a few of them to compare. The marketer’s job was clear: be inside those ten, and as near the top as possible.
Ask the same question now and AI puts a finished answer up first. The user reads that paragraph and usually stops there. The links sit under the answer like footnotes, and the proportion that get clicked is not what it was.
The problem this creates is simple. If AI does not cite you, then to the person reading that answer you are a brand that does not exist — even at rank one.
What actually changes in practice
| SEO | AEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Earning a click in search results | Being cited inside an AI answer |
| Crawlers you deal with | Googlebot, Naver’s search bot | OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and others |
| Unit of optimisation | The keyword | The question (the prompt) |
| Performance metric | Rank · traffic · time on page | Citation rate · mention accuracy · citation share |
| What good content is | A long, rich article | A paragraph that stays complete when cut |
| Technical requirements | Indexing · speed · mobile | Structured data · server rendering · llms.txt (optional) |
The crawler names are easy to confuse
The commonly cited GPTBot and ClaudeBot collect training data. What decides whether you get cited in an answer are the search crawlers, OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot.
The two settings are independent. OpenAI’s own documentation gives the combination “block GPTBot, allow OAI-SearchBot” as a worked example. In other words, saying do not use this for training while still permitting citation in answers is an available choice.
From keywords to questions
In SEO you target a keyword such as “marketing agency in Gwangju”. In AEO you target the sentences people actually put to AI: “which agency in Gwangju is any good at marketing?”, “how much does a marketing agency cost?”, “what do I get out of using an agency?”
The same subject takes a different sentence shape, and a different shape needs different content. A keyword needs a landing page; a question needs an answer.
From long articles to complete paragraphs
This is the largest difference in practice.
AI does not cite a whole document. It lifts paragraphs. So the traditional structure that saves the conclusion for the very end never gets cited: lift the opening and it does not answer anything.
AEO content is written like this:
- Set the question itself as the heading
- Finish the answer in the next one or two sentences
- Attach the elaboration and the evidence after that
The grey block at the top of this article is the example. Lift that paragraph on its own and it still answers the question.
Do we have to abandon SEO?
No. AEO does not replace SEO; it adds a layer on top of it.
The underlying technology overlaps considerably. HTML a crawler can read, a tidy site structure, an accurate sitemap, a fast response — those are preconditions for both. A site with good SEO already has them, which makes AEO easier to start. But that is a statement about the starting line, not a guarantee that a search ranking leads to an AI citation — being found in search and being cited in an answer are separate stages.
Conversely, a site that draws its screen only with JavaScript, or whose indexing is blocked, has to fix SEO before AEO. Most AI crawlers either do not execute JavaScript or execute it only in a limited way, so to an answer engine such a site is a blank page.
Where to start
There is an order.
1. Measure the current state first. Put real questions to the major answer engines and record whether the brand is cited and in what context. Start without this and there is no basis for judging later whether anything improved.
2. Confirm the technical requirements. Whether robots.txt is blocking AI crawlers, whether the body text is in the HTML source, whether the structured data agrees with what is on screen. This stage only takes effect once crawlers re-read the site, so the baseline has to be recorded at the outset for anyone to judge what moved and when.
3. Change the content structure. Rewrite existing articles with question-shaped headings and direct-answer paragraphs. This is the part that takes longest. One caution: replacing the body of a page that already earns search traffic can damage that visibility, so on existing performing pages we take the minimal-intervention route of adding a direct answer and an evidence block.
4. Keep tracking. Answer engine responses change week to week. Being cited once does not mean it holds.
Who does this work?
Navirang is an agency that helps brands get cited appropriately as this shift plays out.
Navirang works nationwide from offices in Seoul and Gwangju, providing this kind of content design and supporting responses across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and Naver AI Search. Actual effect has to be confirmed by measuring again in each case, but preparation of this kind helps strengthen a brand’s digital foundation.
What the work includes is set out on the services page.
Summary
- SEO’s outcome is rank and clicks; AEO’s outcome is citation
- AI cites a paragraph, not a document, so the answer has to come first
- The two share a foundation, so existing SEO assets make AEO faster
- Start without measuring and you cannot judge whether anything improved

Frequently asked questions
Q If we already do SEO, can we skip AEO?
A No. SEO brings a user to the search results page; AEO gets the brand mentioned inside the answer without the results page being involved. The two do share a foundation — indexing, speed, structured data — so the better the SEO on a site, the faster AEO can start.
Q Does doing AEO raise search rankings too?
A There is no direct causal link, but the two often rise together, because much of AEO work — tidying structured data, crawler accessibility, content structured to answer a question — overlaps with what search engines evaluate. Doing AEO in order to raise rankings is the wrong way round, though.
Q How is AEO performance measured?
A You settle a core question set, put it to the answer engines repeatedly, and record whether you were cited, how accurate the mention was, and your citation share against competitors. It does not collapse into a single number the way a search ranking does, so the per-question records accumulate and get read as a trend.
